Queensland Aerial - Professional Drone Operators

While enjoying time at the annual Boyne / Tannum Hookup recently, noticed a familiar drone filming selected events associated with the three day long fishing competition. Needless to say, I was keen to learn more.

As expected, the drone was operated by a locally based company, Queensland Aerial, who specialise in a wide range of services from cinematic film production to industrial mapping and inspection.

Services include (but not limited to) photography or filming of real estate, estate development, industrial & asset inspections, community events such as festivals and sport (football, cricket etc) and much more.

As professional and fully licensed drone operators, operational restrictions apply and some of these include limiting flying height to no more than 120m / 400ft while staying within line-of-sight at all times. Depending on weather conditions, maintaining vision can vary however approximately 800m is generally a good measure.

Of interest, maximum distance the drone can operate away from the pilot is greater than 2.5km's and at speeds of up to 80 km/h. When conducting aerial photography / filming, also worth noting it is a two-person operation using a pair of consoles. There is dedicated console for the pilot / drone operator and another for the person responsible for operating the camera.

If you are wondering about endurance, this can also vary with the type of camera used having an affect. Power to operate the drone aswell as the camera is drawn from the same battery. Average flying time is between 14 - 22 minutes.

However, with multiple batteries charged and ready to go at a moments notice, Queensland Aerial is able to conduct aerial photography or filming for atleast a couple of hours.
